OVER THE TOP
Occasionally, runway fashions are inventive, innovative and maybe experimental casting mainstream clothing design, construction and styling out the window. Avant-garde designers drive the evolution of fashion by creating “out of this world” designs which become tempered for the “ready to wear” market, or sometimes worn for performances by artists such as Lady Gaga or Madonna.

Learning from today’s most notable avant-garde designers such as Alexander McQueen, Iris Van Herpen and Roberto Capucci, the San Francisco based designer, Kata Mari, is inspired by everything around her, always capturing feminine sensuality. Her love of fashion started when the “tweenager” received an old Singer sewing machine from her mother. For several years the self-taught Mari designed and sewed garments for herself and friends until she was selected to show her creations in a local boutique in her hometown, Fayetteville, AR. Creating avant-garde designs unlike anything seen locally, Mari entered her designs in fashion shows, modeling her looks, and winning the “Fan Favorite” award at the DCFP All Star Fashion Show.

“I love being a fashion designer, I create beautiful clothing, work with hair and makeup (artists), walk the runway as a model, and direct and style photo shoots. I love taking a theme and designing a collection around it. This is everything I always wanted and more,” said Mari. “The Goddess Collection has been an ever popular one. I have designed collections ranging from the 1950’s pin-up girl to more modern rock and roll collections. I enjoy costuming, and the mermaid collection is a great example of my passion for that. Range and versatility are important qualities for a designer.”
