Cover Editorial: Fan Bingbing – Award Winning Actress is #2 in “MODE’s World’s 100 Most Beautiful Women 2016”.
Everyone recognizes Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Aniston as being amongst the most successful and highest-paid actresses in the world. Fan Bingbing, China’s leading actress for the past 15 years, has now become part of this exclusive group of actresses. Credited with more than 45 films and numerous television shows, this award- winning actress has created the Fan Bingbing Studio that has produced her films since 2007.
Ms. Bingbing, perhaps best known to U.S. audiences for her role as Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past, will appear in four more X-Men films in the next few years. Whether appearing at the MET Gala in New York City or the Cannes Film Festival in France, the 35 year old radiant beauty has walked the red carpet as a fashion icon showcasing Dior, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Valentino. As a songwriter and pop singer, she released her first album titled “Just Begin” in 2005 followed by several theme songs for her movies.
Mode Lifestyle Magazine’s Terry Check was able to catch up with the ever-so-busy actress for an intimate interview.

Mode: Congratulations Fan on an amazing career as China’s leading actress. How did you manage to get casted for your first major role as Jin Suo in the television series My Fair Princess?
Fan: It was really serendipity. I had worked with Leanne Liu (Taiwanese actress) before, and she recommended me. I will always be thankful for her recognition and help.
Mode: How did you get started as an actress and as a pop singer?
Fan: When I was young I saw the Empress Wu Zetian (in The Empress of the Dynasty), interpreted by Angela Pan (Chinese actress in 1970s-1980s). I thought she was incredibly beautiful and that’s how the dream of becoming an actress started. Then I went to the Xie Jin School of Film and Television Art. At first my mom was against me doing art and performance because she is more conservative and expected me to have a stable job. She finally relented due to my persistence.
“My career is a part of my life,
but I try to never lose touch with
people and always keep on learning”
Mode: In 2003, you starred in the film, Cell Phone, which became the highest-grossing Chinese film of the year. What were your thoughts when you won the Hundred Flowers Award (China’s version of the Golden Globe Awards) for the film?
Fan: Cell Phone was the first movie I acted in. It was also directed by Feng Xiaogang and adapted from Liu Zhenyun’s literature. They offered me such a great opportunity. I felt surprised and happy when I won the Hundred Flowers Awards. To me, the award was an encouragement and recognition.
Mode: Are you ever completely pleased with your performances? Do you feel “If I could play that role again, I could be so much better”?
Fan: I think we all get more experienced as time passes by. If I were to play the same role again, I would probably perform differently than the previous time. It would perhaps be a more mature performance, but maybe that would not be the most adequate interpretation of the character. Every time, performers and directors give the best they can.
Mode: How do you manage to keep your life in balance when you are so busy with your career with projects such as The Lady of the Dynasty, League of Gods, Skiptrace and other films in 2016?
Fan: I enjoy work very much. My career is a part of my life, but I try to never lose touch with people and always keep on learning. I see my house as my own little universe where I can relax and get ready for my next job.
Mode: Many of your films are in Chinese for mainly the Chinese market. Your role as Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past was well received by U.S. audiences. Do you plan to act in more American films spoken in English?
Fan: I am really happy that I got the chance to play the role of Blink and that the audience received it well. It was a totally new experience to me. If there are new possibilities to act in American movies in the future, I will definitely be willing to try my best. I see working in foreign movies as an excellent opportunity for me to learn and as a great chance to let Chinese and western cultures interact. I enjoy different work environments, but I try to let everything come naturally.
Mode: Not only are you talented as an actress with amazing beauty, you are also a fashion model and icon. The Dragon Robe was the fashion highlight of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, and your ad campaign for Louis Vuitton was outstanding. Do you plan to design more fashion in the future; maybe even your own design label?
Fan: Fashion is my kryptonite. I try to keep up with new trends and to understand how the industry works. If someday I have the chance, I would love to become more involved in this area of business, and why not try out my own label.
Mode: Many of your fans love your music. Do you plan to release any new singles next year?
Fan: Well, I am not a professional singer but singing is my hobby and I am always willing to try new things. Currently I do not have any music projects planned, but we will see.
Mode: How does it feel to be ranked as a highly successful actress in the same category of Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie?
Fan: It is such a great honor to me. I admire and respect all these actresses. Their success didn’t happen from one day to another, it is definitely the fruits of their hard work and effort. I would be very happy to see more and more Chinese actresses on the list.
Mode: You recently signed with CAA. How will CAA help your career going forward? Will you spend more time in New York City and Los Angeles?
Fan: I spend most of the time working in China. Because of many different reasons such as time zones and geographical distance, there are many aspects of working abroad that are hard to arrange for my colleagues and me. CAA will help carry the burden and I am very grateful for that. I really like New York and Los Angeles, and would love to have some free time to pay a visit just for pleasure.

Mode: On the personal side, share with our readers something that the public does not know about Fan Bingbing.
Fan: A lot of people think I have a very strong personality, but that’s only when I am at work. In my personal life, I am just like a little girl who acts like a kid and loves collecting dolls.
Mode: Tell us a little about your mother, father and any siblings.
Fan: I started to work at a very young age, so I didn’t have much time to spend with my family. I always wanted to offer them better living conditions and to take them on vacations, so whenever I had the chance I took my mom, dad and brother to work with me.
Mode: What is your favorite?
Fan:-
* Color – Pink
* Flower – Rose
* Pastime when you are not working – Watching movies, playing with my pets
* Food and drink – I am not a picky person but I have a favorite drink, lemonade.
* Book – “Grace: A Memoir”
* Movie – “Notting Hill”, “Malena” and “Elephant”
* 2017 New Year’s Resolution – I hope to find different rolls that suit me. I would also like to finish shooting the new TV show, “Win The World”.
Mode: Looking forward, where do you see yourself in 3 to 5 years?
Fan: I like to let things roll “on their own”. There is a saying in Chinese, “Plans can’t keep the pace of change.” You never know what will happen, so all you can do is work hard, keep on growing, experience new things and enjoy life and work.
